Introduction
The idea for The Buddy emerged from the necessity to haul and plant large trees in tight areas while leaving minimal landscape impact.
Below is a picture of the original cart that was designed to haul our 36” B&B trees. It was way too complicated, too expensive, and narrow in the types of loads it could carry. The mission was to simplify without compromising durability while expanding the number of load types it could handle.
Many planting sites were on upscale lakefront properties in southwest Michigan with shaded yards, soft turf, and hilly terrain. Using our mini-skid steer often damaged these job sites, leaving ruts, broken sprinkler heads, and damaged fence gates.
As a small tree transplanting company, many jobs were completed by just one or two people. Loading a skid-steer for one or two trees was labor-intensive and time-consuming. Traditional carts were difficult to use with larger trees and required too much effort.
The Buddy's lever and locking mechanism made it very easy to lift even the heaviest loads. Once lifted and locked into place, it eliminated the need for further effort in balancing the load. The Buddy could turn on a dime, making it easy to access even the tightest spots. Customers loved it and would come out just to look at it. We told them we were saving the planet, and they loved that!
Other landscapers saw the invention, started to borrow it, and then began renting it. They encouraged me to get a patent and start selling it. The rest is history.
